composting: Backyard composting, Worm composting, and mid-scale industrial composting

For many years, I managed the composting operation in The Presidio- a national park site at the top of the San Francisco peninsula. We took grass from the golf course, bedding and manure from the horse stables, weeds from natural resources, and prunings from landscape maintenance and turned it into valuable compost. All the compost was used on-site in the park from replanting the non-native trees that are a hallmark of the Presidio to making potting mix that grew native plants at five nurseries in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to making compost tea that was sprayed on the golf course greens. I also managed smaller composting projects over the years in some of the neighborhoods-before household composting was available in SF!, at a demonstration site at the native plant nursery that was used for education programs, and at the main community garden. Plus I drove a front loader and a tractor almost every day for years!
